Teacher's guide to understanding Reporting Rules for Digital Platforms regulations

For teachers: how does DAC7 affect you?

Updated over 8 months ago

At MusicTeachers.co.uk We value transparency and compliance with regulations. We want to inform you about the Reporting Rules for Digital Platforms Regulations and how they affect you.

What are reporting rules for digital platforms?

They are the UK version of DAC7 regulations, a directive introduced by the European Union to enhance tax transparency for digital platforms. Although primarily EU-focused, similar reporting requirements apply in the UK, including obligations to report specific income details to HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs).

This means that platforms like ours are required to report information about income earned by self-employed professionals using our services. This ensures compliance with tax regulations and helps HMRC accurately assess taxes owed.

What information do we share with HMRC?

To comply with DAC7 and equivalent UK regulations, we share the following details with HMRC:

  • Your full name

  • Your registered address

  • Your date of birth

  • Your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) - your National Insurance Number.

  • The total income you earned through our platform within the reporting period

  • Details of any payments made to you

Why are we asking for your national insurance number?

Your National Insurance Number (NINO) is an essential part of ensuring accurate tax reporting. HMRC uses the NINO to verify your identity and link reported income to your tax records. Providing your NINO helps prevent errors or delays in processing tax information and ensures your income is correctly recorded.

How will your information be used?

The information you provide will only be shared with HMRC as part of our legal obligations under DAC7 and equivalent UK regulations. We adhere to strict data protection standards and only use your details for compliance purposes. Your privacy and data security are our top priorities.

What do you need to do?

To ensure compliance and uninterrupted use of our platform, please provide your National Insurance Number when prompted. This simple step helps us fulfill our reporting requirements and supports you in staying compliant with tax laws.

If you have any questions or concerns about DAC7 reporting or why we require this information, please don’t hesitate to contact our support team - we’re here to help. You can enter your national insurance number via settings>personal details. Alternatively, teachers not yet published on the platform can enter on their dashboard as part of completing onboarding tasks.

Our reporting timelines

In January 2025, we will report on teachers who joined the platform in 2024 and taught 30 or more lessons, and/or earned more than £2000 in take home fees. In January 2026, we will report on all teachers who teach more than 30 lessons or earn more than £2000 in 2025, regardless of joining year.
