What to include in your first message to a teacher

For students. Some suggestions of information you should give a teacher when you send them your first message.

Your teacher needs information from you about what you are looking for. They would also like to get to know you a little. You have a minimum of 200 characters to write, so here are some things to think about adding:

  • Who are the lessons for?

    • E.g. yourself, a child, a grandparent

  • What experience, if any, do you have in playing music?

  • What is your motivation for lessons?

  • What are your goals?

  • What is your availability?

  • Are you learning for a particular reason?

    • E.g. an exam, a performance, or just for fun?

  • Do you own an instrument?

  • Is there anything else you would like to make the teacher aware of, for example, special requirements, etc?

If you haven't reached 200 characters, you will see an error message to let you know to add more information to your message. Underneath the bottom right of your message box, you will see a counter showing the number of characters you have written.
