Student's guide to trial lessons

This article explains what a trial lesson is, how booking and payment works, and what to expect from your first session with a new teacher.

What is a trial lesson?

A trial lesson is a one-off introductory session with a teacher. It typically differs from regular lessons: it may be shorter or longer, and the price is often different (higher or lower) than the teacher's standard rate.

Trial lessons give you and the teacher a chance to see whether you're a good fit and how to move forward with future lessons.

What happens during a trial lesson?

Your teacher will typically use the session to:

  • Assess your current level

  • Talk about what you enjoy playing or singing

  • Discuss goals for your lessons

  • Give you a taste of their teaching style

The exact content varies by teacher, but the focus is always on working out how to shape the course of your lessons.

How do I book a trial lesson?

Students don't book lessons, your teacher does.

  1. Message your teacher via your Inbox to agree on a date and time

  2. Your teacher creates the lesson in the calendar

  3. You receive an email with a link to the lesson details and payment

How do I pay?

Trial lessons are paid through your account before the lesson takes place. When your teacher creates the lesson, you'll receive an email with a payment link. For full details on the payment process, see our guide to payments.

FAQ:

How do I accept a free trial?

If a teacher has already sent you a free trial, go to your student dashboard

  1. Click "See offers"

How do I view details about my trial lesson?

Details about upcoming lessons such as date, address and confirmation status are shown on your student dashboard. Log in and scroll down to "Future lessons".

Is a trial lesson required?

Not always. Some teachers include a trial lesson as the standard first step with new students. Others let you go straight into a lesson block. It's up to your teacher.

Does my teacher have to offer a trial lesson?

No. Not all teachers offer trial lessons. If your teacher doesn't have the option listed, message them to ask.

Can I get an online trial lesson?

Not all of our teachers offer online lessons, so you will have to talk to your teacher about this.

What's the cancellation policy for trial lessons?

The teacher sets their own cancellation rules for trial lessons. Check with your teacher what applies. The platform's standard 24-hour rule does not apply to trial lessons.
